AutoMounter

An automounter maintains a cache of mounted file systems. File systems aremounted on demand when they are first referenced, and unmounted after aperiod of inactivity. This helps to centralize all file system access, provide a uniform site-wide namespace, and minimize downtimes forclients.

The Berkeley Automounter, Amd, may be used as a replacement for Sun'sautomounter. The choice of which file system to mount can be controlleddynamically with selectors. Selectors allow decisions of the form 'hostnameis this,' or 'architecture is not that.' Selectors may be combinedarbitrarily. Amd also supports a variety of file system types, includingNFS, UFS and the novel program file system. The combination of selectorsand multiple file system types allows identical configuration files to beused on all machines thus reducing the administrative overhead. Amd ensuresthat it will not hang if a remote server goes down. Moreover, Amd candetermine when a remote server has become inaccessible and then mountreplacement file systems as and when they become available.

The automount program is used to manage mount points for autofs, the inlined Linux automounter. Automount works by reading the auto.master(8) map and sets up mount points for each entry in the master map allowing them to be automatically mounted when accessed. The file systems are then automatically umounted after a period of inactivity.
